What Is Arthritis? Here Are Some Answers

Sometimes, the joints of those suffering with osteoarthritis may become filled with fluid that adds to the discomfort of swollen joints. Many people feel that osteoarthritis is made worse by overly humid weather. Then gain, many people that have lived in a humid climate their entire lives do not notice any improvement when visiting a drier climate.

Osteoarthritis commonly affects the spine, feet, hands and the large weight bearing joints, like the knees and hips. In theory, any joint or joints may be affected by osteoarthritis. Joint lining, called synovium, is progressively worn down in those suffering from osteoarthritis.

As osteoarthritis progresses, the affected joints start to appear larger, are generally very stiff and painful, and usually feel worse as the person uses them throughout the day. This last part is one of the key differences between osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Sometimes Heberden's nodes (on the distal joints) or Bouchard's nodes (on the proximal joints) may form in smaller joints. Though these nodes are not necessarily painful, they certainly limit the movement of the fingers quite significantly. In the toes, development of these types of nodes may cause bunions, rendering toes swollen and red in many cases.

Diagnosis of osteoarthritis is generally done through x-rays, which is possible because the cartilage or bone loss, along with bone spurs and other symptoms of arthritis will readily show up in an x-ray.

Some contributing factors that are believed to increase the odds that one may develop osteoarthritis include such things as obesity, diabetes, repeated trauma to particular areas, hormonal disorders, surgery to joints and abnormally formed joints....
